Home Cabinetmaking Carpentry Student Projects

Seattle, a major port and marine-industry hub, is a perfect place to learn boat building. The two-year program provides you the skills to start a career in wood and FRP boat building, boat repair, or related trades. You'll learn lofting and layout, fiberglass lay-up and repair, wood boat construction and repair, and interior and exterior joinery. Jobs are available in custom and commercial boat building shops and repair yards throughout the Puget Sound region.

The curriculum is designed to provide practical hands-on education. Students learn the craft by working on assigned boat projects. The class/shop atmosphere is similar to an actual boat building shop. Class sizes vary from 16-18 students for each instructor. The Marine, Carpentry class has been offered since 1936 as a program of Edison Technical School, which became part of Seattle Central Community College in 1967.

"The instruction is relevant to what industry needs are today" said Spike Nelson, Marine Carpentry graduate. "You use modern materials, and the program provides you an extremely good foundation."
